Health Physicist/Radiation Safety Professional

Cabrera is seeking an experienced & career focused Health Physicist/Radiation Safety Professional to join our nationwide remediation solutions team. With Cabrera, you will leverage career HTRW cleanup experience and technical knowledge to solve our client’s toughest radiological challenges and help mentor developing staff.  You will provide “hands-on” oversight of field measurements and sample collection programs for elevated residual radioactivity and other hazardous wastes; design & oversee implementation of MARSSIM/MARSAME-based survey programs; supervise Radiation Protection Technicians and Decommissioning Survey Teams; and support the Corporate RSO with license program implementation at the field-site level.

The Chief HP is typically the senior technical professional assigned to oversee the success of one or more radiological field projects.  This role includes, but it not limited to the following tasks & responsibilities:

  • Develop/oversee MARSSIM/MARSAME/MARLAP-based sampling, measurement and, analysis programs

  • Develop/oversee Radiation Protection Programs that comply with national/international requirements and established licenses

  • Develop/oversee project-specific technical work products with radiological components (e.g., technical bases documents, operating procedures, work plans, data reports, summary deliverables, etc.)

  • Oversee the set-up and effective operation of field laboratory systems including gamma spectroscopy and low-background gross counting capabilities

  • Oversee the set-up and effective operation of field in-situ measurement systems (Collimated HPGe, isotope identifiers, large-area detectors/arrays, etc.)

  • Interface with client and regulatory stakeholders in a manner that produces “win-win” outcomes

  • Effectively utilize assigned personnel & equipment resources to complete HP-related assignments within schedule and budgetary constraints

  • Identify & leverage advanced technologies like In-Situ Gamma Spectroscopy, 2D/3D modeling, large-area survey systems to provide value-added to client projects

  • Provide technical direction & mentoring to junior staff

  • Act as an RSO, Asst. RSO, or Authorized User on NRC/State license

  • Other ad-hoc tasks, as assigned by the HP Group Manager.

 

    Minimum Qualifications:     The successful candidate shall have, at a minimum, the following qualifications: 

  • B.S. Degree in Health Physics or related scientific/engineering/safety discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience developing/implementing MARSSIM/MARSAME-based radiological survey and sampling strategies and reporting results

  • 5+ years of experience directly supporting the preparation program-level documents (e.g., historical site assessments, characterization studies, post-remedial action reports, etc.) that evaluate and present definitive radiological data

  • 5+ years of experience implementing effective radiation safety programs

  • Ability to meet fitness-for-duty (drug & alcohol testing), medical, respirator use, background screening, training, driving records, strength/dexterity, and other requirements necessary for complete job performance.

  • Willingness to travel, as needed, to client work locations throughout the US & Canada for finite/indefinite duration assignments including construction sites and HTRW sites.                                

 

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Radiation Protection/Health Physics or directly related technical discipline

  • Active certification by the American Board of Health Physics

  • Past experience as RSO on an NRC or Agreement State license

  • Past experience as a formal inspector/auditor of radiological programs

  • Canadian work experience

  • Specific formal training in application of consensus guidance (e.g., MARSSIM, MARSAME, MARLAP)

  • Past experience supervising radiological field staff

  • Experience using HP computer codes (Microshield, RESRAD, RESRAD-Build, etc.)

  • Experience using Canberra Gamma Spectroscopy Systems and associated software (i.e., Genie2K, MGAU, LACE, ISOCS, LABSOCS)

  • Experience using GIS to evaluate and present radiological results data

  • Experience Recent past experience supporting projects requiring successful CA stakeholder interaction

 

Description of ideal candidate:
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with significant diverse radiological D&D experience and sound technical/regulatory knowledge who can effectively evaluate radiological conditions, correctly interpret and apply regulations and industry guidance, communicate effectively with clients and other stakeholders and, successfully lead small teams of technicians & technical professionals.

The ideal candidate can prepare and deliver high quality technical presentations to peer groups and industry events (e.g., Waste Management Symposium, HPS Meetings, etc.) at a level appropriate for the audience.

 

Benefits and Other Information:
This is a salaried exempt position with negotiable annual salary terms.  Position and Grade will be determined by evaluation of education and directly applicable experience against current/future opportunities.

Work hours and telecommuting arrangements are negotiable for the right candidate.

Technician-level experience does not count towards minimum qualifications.
